Comparative Sentence: cheaper or more expensive?

Hai Sobat, siapakah di antara teman kalian yang paling pintar? kalau di bandingkan dengan kalian, siapa yang lebih pintar? nah, untuk mengatakan perbandingan ini biasanya kalian gunakan kata ‘lebih’ dan ‘paling’ seperti dua pertanyaan yang saya gunakan sebelumnya. Sedangkan dalam bahasa Inggris, untuk mengungkapkan perbandingan ada imbuhan ‘-er’ dan ‘-est’, serta kata ‘more’ dan ‘the most’ yang digunakan untuk mendeskripsikan kata ‘lebih’ dan ‘paling’. Jadi kali ini saya akan sharing mengenai kalimat comparative degree/adjectives.
  1. Untuk lebih memahami comparative sentences, perhatikan contoh kalimat berikut ini:
  2. How shall we travel? Shall we drive or go by train?Let’s drive. It’s cheaper. Don’t go by train. It’s more expensive.
    Penggunaan comparative sentences biasanya di ikuti dengan kata than, contohnya:
    • It’s cheaper to drive than go by train.
    • Going by train is more expensive than driving.
  3. Comparative Sentence dengan penambahan -er or more.
    1. Penambahan -er di gunakan untuk adjective (kata sifat) yang terdiri dari 1 syllable (1 suku kata)
      • cheap → cheaper
      • fast → faster
      • large → larger
      • thin → thinner
    2. Penambahan -er juga di gunakan untuk adjective (kata sifat) yang terdiri dari 2 syllable (2 suku kata) yang berakhiran huruf -y (-y → -ier):
      • lucky → luckier
      • early → earlier
      • easy → easier
      • pretty → prettier
    3. Penambahan more di gunakan untuk adjective (kata sifat) yang terdiri dari 2 syllable (2 suku kata) atau lebih
      • more serious
      • more expensive
      • more often
      • more comfortable
    4. Penambahan more juga di gunakan untuk adverbs (kata keterangan) yang berakhiran -ly:
      • more slowly bukan slowlier
      • more seriously bukan seriouslier
      • more easily bukan easilier
      • more quietly bukan quietlier
    5. Cermati perbedaan penggunaan penambahan -er dan more pada contoh kalimat berikut ini

      You’re older than me. You’re more patient than me.
      The exam was quite easy – easier than I expected. The exam was quite difficult – more difficult than I expected.
      Can you walk a bit faster? Can you walk a bit more slowly?
      I’d like to have a bigger car. I’d like to have a more reliable car.
      Last night I went to bed earlier than usual. I don’t play tennis much these days. I used to play more often.
    7. Pada beberapa adjectives (kata sifat) yang terdiri dari 2 syllable (suku kata), dapat menggunakan -er atau more seperti pada kata berikut ini:
      clever - narrow - quiet - shallow - simple
      contoh :
      • It’s too noisy here. Can we go somewhere quieter?
      • or … somewhere more quiet?
  4. Terdapat beberapa adjectives and adverbs yang mempunyai bentuk perbandingan irregular (tak beraturan) seperti berikut ini:
    1. good/well → better
      • The garden looks better since you tidied it up.
      • I know him well – probably better than anybody else knows him.
    2. bad/badly → worse
      • ‘How’s your headache? Better?’ ‘No, it’s worse.
      • He did very badly in the exam – worse than expected.
    3. far → further (or farther)
      • It’s a long walk from here to the park – further than I thought. (or farther than)
    4. catatan : further (but not farther) dapat berarti ‘more’ atau ‘additional’:
      • Let me know if you hear any further news. (= any more news)
